HERDING
WHAT HAPPENS: Herding encompasses the sheep dog trials where a dog was instructed to put three sheep through a course of obstacles in a certain amount of time. The dog and handler who did this the quickest and most direct would be the winner. It starts with an instinct test to see the dogs natural ability, no other knowledge is needed by handler or dog, but basic commands are good. Retrials are a training tool for both dog and handler. The dog is required to complete a certain number of tasks during the trial including maneuvering the livestock through obstacles and into a pen at the competition of tasks. The dog commences the trial with 100 points and points are deducted for non-completion of tasks or general deductions.
WHAT DOGS DOES IT SUIT: Herding breeds that usually compete include; Border Collie, Australian Kelpie, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd. Other breeds that have competed include German Shepherd Dog, Belgian Shepherd in all varieties, Bearded Collie, Collie. The very unusual breeds that have competed include the Puli, Corgi, Shetland Sheepdog, Old English Sheepdog and very unusual Schnauzer (standard) and Samoyed.
WHY DO IT: Herding is very rewarding and challenging for both dog and owner. The natural instincts of the breed come to life and the bonding whilst both you and your dog learn what to do is unforgettable.
