LURE COURSING

WHAT HAPPENS: Lure Coursing stimulates the hound's natural instinct for coursing, a ‘lure' (normally a plastic bag) is tied to a rope or fishing line and pulled along by a specially designed motorcycle or battery operated motor. The course of the lure is decided by the operator and the lure can go through a system of tin pipes to fool the regular dogs. The movement of the lure is done so it acts similar to that of a hare darting along. Dogs are scored on enthusiasm, ability to follow, agility, speed and endurance. The atmosphere at a lure coursing vent is said to have to be experienced!

WHAT DOGS DOES IT SUIT: Dogs that participate in Lure Coursing are usually sight hounds, that is, dogs that use their eyes for hunting. For example - Afghans, Borzois, Greyhounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Deerhounds, Salukis, & Whippets, it may also include the Basenjis, Beagles, & Rhodesian Ridgebacks. But any other dog, pure bred or not, that has a penchant for the chase, may compete.

WHY DO IT: Lure Coursing is loved because it gives your dog the opportunity to do what comes naturally, to chase, sniff the ground, jump, pivot and chase again. This is a sight to see and every dog owner is encouraged to give their dog the opportunity at this sport.  Words cannot describe the expressions on owners' faces when they see their dogs stride out in full flight and chase the lure.  Even if they don't run the whole course it doesn't matter.  It is not competitive and is used to give your dogs' fun activity and an easy way for you to exercise them.
