Leonberger
Bull Mastiff
The flock guards included breeds such as Kangal, Anatolian, Komondor, and Maremma. These dogs are naturally protective and of a large size, they need courage, alertness and loyalty. The requirements were summarized into size, dedication & toughness. These breeds still exist and work as guardians toady but many have been adopted as family members, these breeds need a dedicated owner who will socialize them and not let them get the upper hand. Because these dogs were left to defend the flocks they have been breed to think for them selves, which is a great asset but can cause problems if they don't think what you want them to do is a good idea! They are also territorial (you are their territory) and will protect you to anything they see as a threat (no matter who it is!).

The Mastiffs, such as Mastiff, Great Dane, Newfoundland, Doberman, Rottweiler, Bulldog, Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Pug, Boston Terrier, were originally bred for protection and developed also for warfare and combat especially in the middle ages (yes that was a long time ago) and were adorned with collars with massive spikes and worse! There are many tales of the fallen soldiers being guarded by their dogs. After the Middle Ages the mastiffs were used as guards and protectors and unfortunately as entertainment. It should also be noted some Mastiffs were bred for other reasons, rescuers and companions (e.g. Newfoundland ) . The Mastiffs have increased bone growth and therefore appear as stocky dogs, the have large paws, bulky skulls with heavy jaws. There also tend to have a wrinkly scowl expression (not the type of dog you want to meet in the middle of the night). They also tended to have a smooth coat and abundance of skin. He has a strong sense of smell and territory. The Mastiff descendants of today (both individually and as breeds) have changed, dogs are breed for temperament and the focus is not on fighting or aggression. I would STRONGLY recommend only buying from recognized breeders for some Mastiff breeds!
